Coronavirus information

The Covid-19 crisis is affecting people around the globe and whilst the UK is deeply affected, we are also very worried about people in the countries we buy from, especially those who live in large slums where social distancing is impossible, and where hospital facilities are less advanced than they are in the UK.

In addition to this, in many Indian cities for instance, millions of people who live a day-to-day existence on the streets can no longer earn wages for themselves because of the lockdown. Although they may not have the virus, they can’t earn money to buy food, and without a state security system, they and their families are starving.

Asha Handicrafts, Shared Earth’s supplier in Mumbai, has set up a scheme to help some of these people. They tell us that $6-7 will feed a person for a month, with basic groceries like rice and lentils. That’s the price of a pint of beer – food for a whole month!

We’re setting up a fund to help these people, via Asha Handicrafts, and we’re starting it off with a donation of $3,000 (about £2,400). We’d like if possible to reach $10,000 (about £8,000) as soon as we can, before the situation gets worse in India. We’d love you to help us to reach this target and we hope to post details as to how you can do so shortly.

We are still despatching orders and will continue to do so as normal subject to government advice. You can still phone us on 01904 632896 (for wholesale phone 01904 670321) during normal office hours 9am to 5pm though please bear with us if the phone takes slightly longer to connect than usual. Please be assured that we are taking all measures to ensure we minimise the risk of spreading the virus.

We’d like to assure you that we are trying to do our very best for our suppliers, our staff and of course our customers, and if there is anything in particular we can do for you in this difficult time, please let us know. As with all small businesses things are not easy for us but we are committed to seeing this crisis through! We are continuing to work with our suppliers on new product development to ensure that when restrictions ease up and shops start opening again, we have a fantastic selection of products for you to choose from.

Your support during these exceptional times is very much appreciated.
