Fair Trade, Eco and Ethical

Caught by the lockdown in Bolivia + new glass supplier

In February Florinda Henderson, who has been with Shared Earth on and off for many years, flew to Bolivia to visit her family there. We asked her to visit our new recycled glass supplier there at the same time, to collect samples and recommend future products. They’re a high quality product, from a great Fair Trade supplier, and we expect to have a collection of them in stock this summer.

For two months now Florinda has been trapped there because of the lockdown, fortunately with her family. Like most countries, there is a strict lockdown in Bolivia. Commercial flights were suspended on 12 March, and all international flights on 21 March. On 22 March, all private and public transport was suspended. About 2,500 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed, with 118 deaths, a tiny number compared to the UK, perhaps partly because the Bolivian government acted quickly to contain the virus. Florinda visited the recycled glass factory just before it was forced to close down.

Florinda’s family have a small farm in Tarija, in southern Bolivia near the border with Argentina. It’s a big fruit-growing area, and her sister produces grapes and peaches as well as potatoes and maize.
