Meet a miniature menagerie carved from stone. This set contains eight Kisii soapstone animals; a fish, elephant, seal, bird, pig, rhinoceros, tortoise and cat. Each shaped by hand before being sanded, painted and polished to a smooth finish.

Small enough to sit on a desk, shelf or windowsill, these tiny creatures make characterful wedding and birthday favours, party-bag treats or thoughtful gifts for animal lovers. Share the set between friends and colleagues, use the animals as playful table decorations or keep the whole collection together to create a charming display.

The soapstone is mined by hand without machinery in south-western Kenya before being carved by specialist artisans. Each piece passes through several skilled stages, with sales providing valuable income for the makers and the family members who help with production.

Traditionally, men have undertaken the higher-paid carving and painting work, while women have often been responsible for the lower-paid sanding and polishing. Working with the producer group, we have helped train women in carving and painting, giving them access to a wider range of skills and better-paid opportunities.
