Elcione de Souza started her business in Manaus (the capital of Amazonia) not just to make a life for herself but to provide local indigenous women with an opportunity to improve themselves and their families. We all hear about the eco aspects of the Amazon, but what about the people who live there? Most of the thirteen women who work with Elcione have problems at home with drugs or violence - almost all have sons or daughters who get involved with drugs as teenagers. Now, through collecting and cleaning seeds, helping to make this jewellery and a living for themselves - they’ve become clean. They’re creating a great example for their community.
