This set of six rabbit-shaped ornaments is hand-carved from Kisii soapstone and finished in a joyful assortment of vibrant colours. Each rabbit is carefully sanded, painted with delicate decorative details and polished to create a beautifully smooth, glossy finish.

Perfect for Easter and spring displays, these characterful rabbits look lovely arranged across a mantelpiece, nestled among seasonal foliage or used to add colour to a table setting. They also make thoughtful party favours, individual keepsakes or small gifts for anyone who appreciates animals and handmade crafts.

The soapstone is mined by hand without machinery in south-western Kenya before being carved by specialist artisans. Each piece then passes through several skilled stages, including sanding, painting and polishing. Sales of Kisii stone carvings provide valuable income for the artisans and the family members who help with production.

Traditionally, men have undertaken the higher-paid carving and painting work, while women have often been responsible for the lower-paid sanding and polishing stages. Working with the producer group, we have helped train women in carving and painting, giving them access to a broader range of skills and better-paid opportunities.
