Managing Director Jeremy Piercy and Senior Designer Michelle Hughes have recently returned from a trip to India and Bangladesh. Michelle reports on the trip:
"Again we had a very successful trip to India. We've been encouraging and helping our producers to make recycled products for a while and were very excited to find that many of our producers had come up with some exciting new ranges. Tara have developed jewellery boxes made from recycled saris, loom waste,,recycled packaging and paper beads made from recycled beads. The Federation of Tibetan Cooperatives in India have been developing bags that are made from pre consumer waste. Rejected packaging has been transformed into funky bags. We travelled to Jaipur in Rajasthan to visit Gopalas, where we found lots more colourful recycled patchwork wall hangings and throws. In Mumbai we found bags made from recycled tyres and recycled plastics.
"From India we went to Bangladesh, the first time for both of us. It's quite different from India. Brightly painted cycle rickshaws line the streets, and the local people actually do use recycled cement bags for their shopping. We spent a day in the villages, four hours away from Dhaka, where our recycled packets and cement bags ranges are made. It was wonderful to see the products being made as they combine traditional techniques of basket weaving and hand loom weaving with recycling. There are lots of exciting ranges on the way."
